Merchant Navy Welfare Board

The Merchant Navy Welfare Board (MNWB) was established in 1948 and is a registered charity that acts as the umbrella charity for the maritime charity sector, promoting co-operation between organisations that provide welfare services to merchant seafarers and their dependants within the UK.

Today the Board has around 43 members subscribing to its Constitution and maintains fifteen Port Welfare Committees throughout the UK as well as and one in Gibraltar and one in the Falkland Islands. Membership of its Council comes from ship owners, seafarers' trade unions, nautical charities and Government. The Board has, for over 60 years, been a forum where those whose interest is the welfare of seafarers can work harmoniously together. This work continues to evolve recognising the changes that affect both serving and retired seafarers.

Welfare support is provided using the Board's unique and comprehensive knowledge of the UK maritime charity sector, together with a wide network of industry contacts. Funded in partnership with fellow members of the Maritime Charities Group, the Board operates the Seafarer Support Helpline for the entire maritime charity sector (Merchant Navy, Royal Navy and fishing fleet). The referral service directs and where appropriate transfers enquirers to welfare organisations best suited to help. MNWB trained staff welcome enquiries via telephone on a Freephone number 0800 121 4765 available between 09:30 - 16:30 Monday to Friday or via the website

MNWB has worked in close partnership with Care Ashore for over thirty years and is delighted to be associated with the charity’s welfare and project work for which we often provide funding. We have witnessed first-hand how their highly motivated staff team make a positive impact by going that ‘extra mile’ and quietly providing life changing welfare support for seafarers in need.
